Bryce Hammond, "Save the Robots" New Paintings
Infusion Gallery, 719 South Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90014
February 1-25, opening reception February 2nd, 6-11pm
Painter Bryce Hammond has been showing his work professionally for 14 years and working full time as a fine artist since 1997. Hammond's work uses imagery of the Urban- American experience: run down squat dwellings, sparsely furnished rooms, road side motels and cityscapes complete with billboards and graffiti. He uses numerous layers of paint and writing to create depth-in-perspective and compositional balance within his paintings.
Bryce's solo exhibition "Save the Robots" at Infusion Gallery contains several pieces which exemplify these architectural and urban themes. This exhibition, however, includes several paintings that represent a collaboration of imagery between Bryce and his six-year old daughter Eden. The artist comments, "I have been coming down to Florida from my Brooklyn studio to be with my family and Eden has been drawing all these robots with colored sharpies. She has drawn hundreds and they are amazing."
Hammond decided to incorporate the robots into the new work. He began enlarging the robots to the 48" range and placing small compositions within the creatures' bodies. Hammond then added text and physics equations with oil stick. The outcome appears as a chalkboard invasion plan. After these three large paintings, the artist began adding the robots to the imagery in all of the new work. Hammond says, "Working with Eden's creations has been incredibly insightful. My favorite thing is that I have been able to work in Florida and spend every day with my family. The change in my travel schedule has been a serious blessing."
Mr. Hammond was deep into the LA show paintings when the robots entered the work. He decided to name the show Save the Robots after an East Village after-hours club he frequented in the early 90's. "It seemed ironic and somehow fitting to name the show after the club. My life and career are so far from those late nights in Alphabet city. Now a late night just means I am working late or one of the kids is sick," the artist remarks.
Bryce Hammond's main international-level representation is Trinity Gallery(soon to be Alan Avery Gallery) in Atlanta. He is on the roster with Jim Dine, Chuck Close and David Hockney among others. Trinity has placed him in Art News, Art in America and New American Paintings. On February 20th, Hammond will be one of Trinity Gallery's top 25 artists creating portraits of the gallery's top 25 collectors for the About Face Exhibition (see Art News for more information). Trinity is an established gallery and has a very formal approach to gallery exhibitions.
The show at Infusion Gallery has offered more freedom regarding format and imagery to Bryce's "Save the Robots Show;" Freedom that the artist has greatly anticipated over the past few years. Hammond says, "I'm excited to show with an artist-run gallery. Working with Infusion is like going back to my roots of self-promoted shows, and it's downtown LA, which I love.
